Caracol Mayan Ruins
& Mountain Pine Ridge
In 1938, Rosa Mai stumbled upon some ruins on the western edge of the Maya Mountains. Rosa unknowingly discovered the largest Mayan ruin in Belize. It has since been named Caracol and is located some 1500ft atop a plateau within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve.
The Caracol tour will take you through what was the main urban and power centers of the ancient Mayan world. This is a large set of ruins, just the main city center measured 12 miles across and had a population of more than 140,000 people. They dominated this whole area, even conquering Tikal and Naranjo!
The journey to Caracol takes you through a stunning and peculiar tropical pine forest named Mountain Pine Ridge. The rugged road to the site keeps Caracol secluded enough that it's in excellent condition. Being remote has also kept people from disturbing the habitat of some very rare wild life living at the site. So on your tour, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the rare Ocellated Turkey, the extremely rare Keel-billed Toucan or perhaps even the legendary Mot-Mot.
To fully grasp the scope of the Mayan Empire you must see Caracol. Going with a Pacz tour guide will ensure that not only do you see the whole site, but that you feel the power the Mayans once wielded at the Caracol of old.
The Tours of Caracol also includes parts of the Mountain Pine Ridge such as: The Rio Frio Cave, Rio On Pools.
