The Cayo District is the second largest district in Belize that is land lock by the other district in the east and south and Peten, Guatemala to the West. This is the fastest growing district for eco-tourism. Cayo boost an abundant amount of Caves, River, Mountains and Maya Temples and endless opportunities for adventures tours.
There is real a “Best Time to Visit” the Cayo district. You can visit all year long. although the opportune time depending of what you want to do, then take in to consideration Belize’s Wet and dry season.

Just a 2-hour drive from Belize City, San Ignacio Town is the Adventures in nature Captial. San Ignacio and Santa Elena together make up the largest town in the Cayo District. The area of Belize is known for drawing adventurers and thrill seekers from all over the world.
San Ignacio is connected to its twin town, Santa Elena, by the only suspension bridge in the country, Hawkesworth Bridge. This bridge is the only suspension bridge in the country.
San Ignacio Town began as a logging camp in the late 1800s, since then it’s grown up quite a bit. San Ignacio holds the title of Belize’s second largest city and has a whopping 30’000 residents. You can find hotels that range from 15 USD to 4 stars with rooms with their own swimming pool. Many are located in the centre of town, and San Ignacio Hotels can be even on the outskirts of town. Food goes from nice restaurants to street carts serving up tacos, tamales, and ganaches. Most things you may want or need can be bought here, so there is no need to try to bring every toiletry or medicine you think you could ever possibly need.
Downtown San Ignacio is the beating heart of these two towns. It’s the place to book a tour, find tour companies and enjoy town life at the market or eat at a variety of restaurants.
They are various options for travelling from Belize City to San Ignacio.
San Ignacio Airport – Maya Flats Airstrip is about 5 miles away from San Ignacio Town. Tropic Air carries a few daily flights to Western Belize from the Phillip Goldson International Airport or Belize City.
Sadly, Tropic Air Closed its office sometime during or after covid. Now the Airstrip received private flights only.
We have seen many traveler rent a car and travel to the Cayo District. At times they go to some of the most remote areas, this, of course, is with the right rental vehicle. We would recommend renting a car if you plan to have some unexpected adventures.
You will find rental companies once you have exited the International Airport.
Another great option for getting to San Ignacio is by shuttle. Many people have taken this option for its flexibility. Offering Pickup and Drop off the many hotels and resorts. Your hotel may also offer this service. William and a few others offer great transportation service which adds a little to your vacation in Belize.
There aren’t any animals on these buses. The bus leaves every hour from the Terminal. You may wanna take a cab first, before catching a bus. These buses do not pass by the airport.
Travel tip: Buses are labeled with the final stop. In this case: Travel to San Ignacio the bus will be labelled Benque. The Conductor will call out the destination if you are taking the bus in the terminal.
