Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Tour

The tour starts with a drive through the quaint villages of Cristo Rey and San Antonio. Then a short hike through the jungle to the enchanting Rio Frio Cave. After touring the cave, it’s back to the van and off to the breathtaking Rio On Pools. These are some of the nicest swimming holes in the country of Belize. After lunch and a swim, the tour will end at Big Rock Falls, where you can dive into a scenic 80 ft high waterfall in a beautiful river valley.

  • The Rio Frio Cave

-This cave is considered one of the best cave systems in Belize. It is one of the top attractions within the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. At both ends of the Rio Frio Cave stands 65 feet tall opening, and has a length of around a quarter-mile. Explore the many natural fresh-water pools, waterfalls and stalactite formations found inside the cave.

  • The Rio On Pools

A series of small waterfalls connecting pools that the river has carved out of granite boulders. The pools are refreshing for a dip and the smooth slabs of granite are perfect for stretching out to dry off. It’s a remote location but a popular spot for tourists on their way back from Caracol. Locals also visit the area on long weekends.

  • Big Rock Falls

This waterfall was carved from some of the oldest rocks found in Central America. Standing 150-foot tall with a pool at its base. This waterfall is the most photographed fall in all of Belize. Big Rock is a hidden gem, suits both adrenaline junkies (diving from the cliff), and relaxation lovers (wading or lying on the rocks).

  • Caracol Mayan Ruins

    – The Mayan Ruins are also near the area, It’s a tour that is normally done separately.

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Description

Nestled in the Cayo District of Southern-Central Belize, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve stands as a refreshing escape from the hotter lowlands, offering a variety of experiences that cater to nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Established in 1944, this vast nature reserve spans an impressive 300 square miles, dominated by a striking landscape of pine trees, which presents a stark contrast to the typical tropical scenery of the country.

Visitors to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve can expect to see and experience a range of natural wonders and activities. The reserve is not only about its breathtaking views and tranquil ambiance but also about the rich tapestry of wildlife that calls this place home. Bird enthusiasts can delight in spotting species like the Acord Woodpeckers, Rufous-capped Warbler, and the elusive Harpy Eagle, especially from Autumn to Spring when seasonal species like the Hepatic Tanager and Chipping Sparrow make their appearance.

The tour includes a drive through quaint villages, a short hike to the enchanting Rio Frio Cave, which is renowned for its impressive stalactite formations and natural pools. A visit to the breathtaking Rio On Pools follows, offering visitors the chance to swim and relax in its refreshing pools and granite boulders. The adventure continues with a final stop at Big Rock Falls, where visitors can dive from an 80 ft high waterfall or enjoy some serene moments wading on the rocks.

In addition to these activities, the reserve’s history and recovery from a devastating fire in 1949 have led to significant conservation efforts, making it a “production forest” where the balance of nature and human presence is delicately maintained. The highest point in the reserve, Baldy Beacon, offers no obstruction from pine trees due to erosion over millions of years, providing unobstructed, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Overall, visitors can expect a full day of outdoor adventure, swimming, hiking, and exploring some of the best natural attractions Belize has to offer. There is no wrong time to visit Mountain Pine Ridge, but for those looking to enjoy the outdoors without the rain, it is advised to schedule a trip outside of the rainy season, which runs from June to November. However, the woodland creatures are often more visible in the rain, adding an extra element of excitement for wildlife watchers.
